The Lift Is a Personality Test

Vintage ski poster of two strangers on a chairlift, one leaning in mid-conversation, the other gazing silently at geometric snow-covered peaks under an ochre sun.

There are two kinds of people on a chairlift, and the chairlift finds them out every time.

On a good ski day everybody's amped. You slide on, the bar comes down, and before the chairs clear the loading ramp somebody is already talking. Where you from. What are you riding. Did you see that guy yard-sale on the traverse. Five minutes with a stranger and you know their job, their home mountain, and their whole opinion about the parking situation.

Then there's the other kind. They get on, give you a nod, and stare at the mountain like it owes them money. You offer a "beautiful day, huh" and you get a "yep" and eleven minutes of silence. You spend the rest of the ride doing math on whether to try again or just admire your gloves.

I've been both of these people. Depends on the day. Depends on the legs, honestly.

What gets me is what it reveals. Skiing looks like a group activity. You ride up together, you say you'll do lunch, you carve big S's next to each other. But for a lot of people it's the most solo thing they do all winter. They came to be alone on a mountain with a few thousand other people. The lift is where you find out which kind you're strapped to for the next ten minutes. I've had rides that turned into friendships and rides that turned into me studying my glove seams.

I keep wondering if some psychology department has studied this. Personality types and chairlift behavior. Introverts versus extroverts, thirty feet off the ground, trapped on a bench with a stranger. Feels like data somebody's leaving on the table. All I know is what I've seen, and it's an interesting read of humanity.

Anyway. Max Vert doesn't have anything to say about your awkward lift conversations. Nobody in the game chats you up about the parking situation. But it is something you can play instead of talking to people, if you're not in the mood. Headphones on, cards out, down the mountain by yourself.
